Precious Metals IRAs: Understand Your Options.

Learn how a self-directed IRA can hold qualifying physical gold, silver, platinum or palladium, how the account is funded and stored, and which costs and risks to review before making a decision.

Start With the Basics

What is a self-directed IRA?

A self-directed individual retirement account is an IRA held by a custodian that allows a broader range of investments than many conventional IRA providers offer. The account owner directs investment choices, subject to the custodian’s policies and applicable tax rules.

A precious metals IRA is a self-directed IRA used to hold qualifying physical metals. “Gold IRA” and “Silver IRA” are common names based on the metal being discussed; they are not separate tax categories created by the IRS.

Self-directed does not mean the account owner can personally store IRA-owned bullion. Eligible metals must be held within an appropriate IRA custodial arrangement.
Four Distinct Roles

How does a precious metals IRA work?

Understanding who does what helps you compare providers and review the full transaction.

01

You direct the account

The IRA owner decides whether qualifying physical metals fit their objectives and authorizes account transactions.

02

A custodian administers it

The IRA custodian maintains the account, processes authorized transactions and provides required account and tax reporting. Limitless Metals currently works with CNB Custody for eligible transactions.

03

A dealer supplies the metals

Limitless Metals helps customers review available products, obtain a purchase quote and complete the metals transaction through the IRA process.

04

A depository stores them

Qualifying metals are delivered to an approved custodial storage arrangement. Storage options, availability and charges should be confirmed with the custodian before purchase.

Funding the Account

Transfer, rollover or contribution?

The right route depends on where your retirement funds are held and the rules of your current plan.

IRA transfer

Funds move from one IRA trustee or custodian to another without being paid to you. Ask the receiving custodian how to request a direct transfer.

Eligible plan rollover

Assets from an eligible retirement plan may be moved to an IRA if the plan and tax rules allow it. A direct rollover generally sends the funds to the receiving IRA rather than to you personally.

New contribution

You may contribute to an IRA if you meet the applicable eligibility rules and annual limits. A purchase minimum is different from an IRS annual contribution limit.

If a retirement distribution is paid to you, different timing and withholding rules may apply. Confirm the method with the existing plan administrator, the receiving custodian and your tax professional before moving funds.
Product Eligibility

Which metals can an IRA hold?

Certain gold, silver, platinum and palladium coins and bullion can qualify, but not every product sold as “investment grade” is IRA eligible.

Learn how qualifying physical silver may be purchased and held within a self-directed IRA.

Federal tax law makes exceptions for certain coins and bullion that satisfy specific requirements. Confirm the eligibility of the exact product with the IRA custodian before purchasing it for the account.
Before You Decide

Review the total cost and the risks.

Compare more than the spot price of a metal or a single advertised account fee.

  • Product price: Ask for the exact coin or bar, its metal content and the total quoted purchase price.
  • Dealer spread: Ask how a future buyback price would be determined; resale proceeds are not guaranteed.
  • Account costs: Review custodial, transaction, storage, shipping and possible closing charges.
  • Market and liquidity risk: Metals can lose value, and selling physical products may take time and involve costs.
  • IRA rules: Improper transactions, ineligible products or mishandled distributions may have tax consequences.

Limitless Metals’ current IRA transaction minimum is $5,000. This is a company purchase minimum, not an IRS contribution limit.

Common Questions

Precious Metals IRA FAQ

Is a precious metals IRA the same as a self-directed IRA?

A precious metals IRA is a self-directed IRA used to hold qualifying physical precious metals. The account remains subject to the rules applicable to its IRA type.

Can I keep IRA-owned metals at home?

Do not assume personal possession qualifies. Federal rules impose trustee possession requirements for eligible bullion. Confirm custody and storage arrangements with the IRA custodian and a qualified tax professional.

Can I move money from an existing IRA or 401(k)?

Potentially, through a direct IRA transfer or an eligible retirement-plan rollover. Eligibility and procedures depend on the existing account or plan. Confirm them before initiating a distribution.

Does CNB Custody recommend specific metals or dealers?

The account owner directs investment decisions. CNB Custody’s public materials state that it does not recommend a specific precious metals dealer. Review products, pricing and providers independently.

Where can I see the fees?

Our Company Information page summarizes CNB’s published fee schedule and storage charges. Confirm the current charges for your account and selected storage arrangement before completing a transaction.
