Gold IRA Storage Rules 2026: IRS Requirements, Depositories & Fees

Where is the gold in a Gold IRA actually stored? Unlike gold purchased for personal delivery, qualifying physical precious metals held inside an IRA require an appropriate trustee or custodial arrangement. Understanding custody, professional vault storage, and the associated fees is essential before moving retirement funds into physical metals.

This 2026 guide explains the IRS framework, the roles of custodians and depositories, segregated versus non-segregated storage, insurance considerations, and questions investors should ask before purchasing metals.

1. What Does the IRS Require for Gold IRA Storage?

Internal Revenue Code Section 408(m) generally treats metals and coins as collectibles when purchased by an IRA. Section 408(m)(3) makes exceptions for certain qualifying coins and sufficiently fine gold, silver, platinum and palladium bullion. For the bullion exception, the law requires physical possession by a trustee described in Section 408(a).

Eligible IRA trustees and custodians generally include banks and certain qualifying or IRS-approved nonbank entities. The IRS also cautions that IRA owners taking possession of IRA-owned coins can result in those coins being treated as distributed. See IRS Publication 590-A, IRS Publication 590-B and the IRS explanation of collectibles and precious metals.

Important distinction: The IRS does not publish a universal list of commercially branded “IRS-approved depositories.” Rather, compliance depends on the statutory trustee-possession requirement, the eligibility of the asset, and the actual custodial arrangements. Confirm the custodian’s authorized storage process rather than relying on marketing descriptions alone.

2. Can You Store Gold IRA Metals at Home?

Investors should not assume that placing IRA-owned gold in a home safe, personal safe-deposit box, or an LLC-controlled storage arrangement satisfies the relevant tax rules. Taking personal possession or control can create significant tax exposure, including a deemed distribution or prohibited-transaction issues depending on the circumstances.

Gold held outside a retirement account is different: individuals who buy bullion directly may generally arrange their own personal storage. For IRA-held metals, follow the custodian’s approved possession and shipment procedures. Seek independent tax advice before contemplating a home-storage or “checkbook IRA” structure.

3. How Do the Dealer, Custodian and Depository Work Together?

  1. IRA custodian: Establishes and administers the account, processes authorized funding and transactions, holds records, and handles applicable reporting.
  2. Precious metals dealer: Provides pricing and supplies the eligible coins or bars the account purchases.
  3. Depository: Safeguards the physical metals under the custodian’s approved arrangement and maintains inventory controls.

4. Segregated vs. Non-Segregated Gold IRA Storage

Compare the two common arrangements below. On smaller screens, swipe horizontally to see all columns.

Feature Segregated storage Non-segregated storage
How metals are kept Customer’s specific holdings are separately identified and physically stored apart Eligible equivalent bullion may be held alongside other clients’ metals with ownership recorded by the depository
Original coins/bars returned Typically designed for return of the specific stored pieces, subject to agreement Equivalent eligible products may be returned instead
Relative cost Often higher Often lower
Best question to ask Which items will be individually identified? What equivalence and allocation rules apply?

Terms vary by custodian, depository and metal type. Obtain the actual storage agreement instead of assuming every provider uses these terms identically.

5. What Is Delaware Depository, and What Does It Charge?

Delaware Depository provides precious-metals safekeeping services and is an option in some IRA custodial programs. Its direct non-commercial fee schedule may be different from the rate quoted by an IRA custodian. Investors should distinguish annual custodial administration charges from depository storage costs and any handling, shipping or withdrawal fees.

6. What Fees Should Gold IRA Investors Budget For?

Common cost categories include an account establishment fee, recurring account administration, vault storage, shipping and insurance, transaction processing, dealer premiums or spreads, and possible distribution or account-termination charges.

For example, a $100 annual vault-storage fee over five years totals $500 if the rate remains unchanged. That figure is only storage—not a comprehensive estimate of Gold IRA expenses. Compare the written fee schedules of the relevant parties and ask whether charges are flat, percentage-based or based on account value.

7. What About Vault Security and Insurance?

Before choosing a storage arrangement, ask who holds the insurance policy, which losses are covered or excluded, how metal values are calculated for claims, how holdings are reconciled, and what happens if metals are shipped or distributed. Vault coverage is not a guarantee against changes in precious-metal market prices, and bullion held at a private depository should not be confused with an FDIC-insured bank deposit.

8. How Do You Move a 401(k) to a Gold IRA With Proper Storage?

Eligible investors may be able to transfer or roll over retirement assets to a self-directed IRA that permits qualifying precious metals. Eligibility depends on plan terms and distribution rules. A typical sequence is to establish the account with an appropriate custodian, coordinate funding through a permitted transfer or rollover, select eligible metals with the dealer, and have the purchased metals delivered directly into the custodian’s approved depository arrangement.

For the complete funding process, see our 2026 step-by-step guide to rolling over a 401(k) into a Gold IRA and our Gold IRA rules and eligible metals overview.

9. Can You Take Physical Delivery of Your Gold IRA Metals?

A custodian may offer an in-kind distribution of physical metals, subject to the account agreement. A distribution from a traditional IRA generally has tax implications, and an early-distribution additional tax may apply in some circumstances. Consult a qualified tax professional before requesting delivery; taking possession should not be treated as routine IRA storage.

10. Gold IRA Storage Checklist

  • Is the trustee or custodian qualified under the applicable rules?
  • Which depository will physically hold the metals?
  • Are the proposed coins and bars IRA-eligible?
  • What do segregated and non-segregated options mean in this contract?
  • What are the full annual account, vault, transaction and shipping fees?
  • What insurance provisions, exclusions and claims limits apply?
  • How are inventories, statements and audits handled?
  • What is the process and cost for selling, transferring or taking a distribution?

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the IRS require a specific depository company?

The relevant federal rules focus on eligible precious metals and qualified trustee possession; they do not prescribe one universal commercial depository brand. Confirm the specific arrangement with the custodian.

Is storing Gold IRA bullion at home allowed?

Do not assume so. Personal possession can create serious tax and compliance issues. Follow the account custodian’s qualified-possession procedures and obtain independent advice on any unconventional structure.

Are segregated storage fees always higher?

They frequently are, but current account-specific schedules should determine the comparison.

Can a Gold IRA contain silver, platinum or palladium?

Yes, certain qualifying products in those metals may be eligible, subject to applicable fineness, coin and custodial requirements.

Is professional vault storage the same as FDIC insurance?

No. Depository insurance, if provided, follows private policy terms; it is not federal deposit insurance against market losses.
