Perth Mint Releases 2027 Lunar Goat 1 oz Gold Coin With Maximum Mintage of 30,000

2027 Australian Lunar Goat 1 oz gold bullion coin with Limitless Metals logo

Limitless Metals introduces the newly released Australian Lunar Series III Year of the Goat coin as an exclusive featured offering for precious metals investors and collectors.

The Perth Mint has officially released its 2027 Australian Lunar Series III Year of the Goat bullion collection, introducing a new generation of gold, silver and platinum coins inspired by the Chinese lunar calendar.

Among the new releases, the 2027 Australian Lunar Series III Year of the Goat 1 oz Gold Bullion Coin stands out with one troy ounce of 99.99% pure gold and a maximum worldwide mintage of 30,000 coins. The Perth Mint lists September 8, 2026, as the official release date for the 2027 Year of the Goat bullion range. Perth Mint

Limitless Metals is now featuring the one-ounce gold release as an exclusive coin offering for its clients, giving investors another option for owning physical gold in a limited-production sovereign bullion format.

The Latest Chapter in Australian Lunar Series III

The Perth Mint’s Lunar program has become one of the better-known annual precious metals series built around the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac.

The mint established its first Australian lunar coin program in 1996 and is currently producing its third series. The Goat represents the eighth animal of the zodiac cycle and is the featured animal for 2027.

The 2027 bullion program includes Goat coins produced in gold, silver and platinum, with gold denominations ranging from 1/20 ounce through 10 ounces. The one-ounce gold version carries one of the most important distinctions in the range: its production is capped at 30,000 coins.

For buyers who normally associate physical gold with conventional bars, American Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs or other widely traded bullion products, the Lunar Goat provides a different format—combining sovereign bullion with an annually changing design and a defined maximum production level.

2027 Australian Lunar Goat 1 oz Gold Coin Specifications

According to The Perth Mint, the 2027 one-ounce gold bullion coin contains exactly 1.000 troy ounce of gold with a purity of 99.99%, or .9999 fine gold.

Official specifications include:

  • Year: 2027
  • Metal: Gold
  • Gold Content: 1 troy ounce
  • Purity: 99.99% / .9999 fine gold
  • Minimum Gross Weight: 31.107 grams
  • Maximum Diameter: 32.60 mm
  • Maximum Thickness: 2.95 mm
  • Monetary Denomination: AUD $100
  • Finish: Bullion
  • Maximum Mintage: 30,000
  • Legal Tender: Australia
  • Mint: The Perth Mint
  • Reverse Designer: Wade Robinson
  • Obverse Effigy: Dan Thorne portrait of King Charles III

The coin is officially recognized as Australian legal tender with a face value of AUD $100, although its physical gold content represents the much more significant component of its market value.

A New Year of the Goat Design

The 2027 gold coin introduces new artwork created specifically for the Year of the Goat.

Its reverse depicts a goat standing on a mountainous plain surrounded by rugged terrain, with a solitary tree appearing in the distance. The design also incorporates the Chinese character for “Goat,” the inscription “GOAT 2027,” and The Perth Mint’s traditional “P” mintmark.

The obverse features the Dan Thorne effigy of King Charles III, along with the coin’s weight, purity and monetary denomination.

The result is a coin that retains the underlying characteristics of investment-grade gold bullion while offering artwork that changes as the Lunar Series progresses from year to year.

Security Feature Built Into the Coin

The 2027 Lunar Goat also includes a modern authentication feature.

The Perth Mint has incorporated a micro-engraved letter within the reverse design. The feature is intended to be visible only under magnification and is designed to make the coin more difficult to counterfeit.

Each bullion coin is also supplied in a protective acrylic capsule.

Authentication technology has become an increasingly relevant feature in modern bullion products as sovereign mints continue to incorporate design elements intended to make high-value precious metals products easier to verify.

Why the 30,000-Coin Mintage Matters

The headline specification for this particular release is its 30,000-coin maximum mintage.

That number does not mean 30,000 coins have already been produced or sold. Rather, it establishes the maximum number of one-ounce 2027 Gold Lunar Goat bullion coins The Perth Mint has authorized for the release.

The Perth Mint’s official product listing confirms the 30,000 maximum for the 1 oz gold bullion denomination.

A maximum mintage does not guarantee that a bullion product will develop a higher premium or appreciate relative to the underlying gold price. Future value can be affected by gold prices, investor demand, secondary-market liquidity, condition, availability and other market factors.

However, for buyers who value limited production in addition to physical gold content, the published maximum provides a clear distinction from bullion products whose production may be substantially larger or unlimited.

Several other sizes within the same 2027 Goat gold bullion program are listed by The Perth Mint with unlimited maximum mintages, making the 30,000-coin cap particularly relevant to the one-ounce version.

Physical Gold Meets Lunar Series Collectibility

The appeal of the Lunar Goat comes from two characteristics that do not always overlap.

First, it is a bullion product containing one full troy ounce of .9999 fine gold.

Second, it is part of a continuing 12-year design series.

Rather than reproducing essentially the same image each year, the Australian Lunar Series changes its featured animal and artwork as the lunar calendar progresses.

For some buyers, that creates an additional collecting component beyond the value of the metal itself.

The Perth Mint describes the current collection as Australian Lunar Series III, continuing a lunar coin tradition the mint began in 1996.

The 2027 Goat follows the 2026 Year of the Horse and will eventually form part of the complete 12-animal Lunar Series III cycle.

Gold, Silver and Platinum Join the 2027 Release

The Goat launch extends beyond the one-ounce gold coin.

The Perth Mint’s September 8 bullion release included gold Goat coins in 10 oz, 2 oz, 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz sizes. Silver versions were announced in sizes including 1 kilo, 5 oz, 2 oz, 1 oz and 1/2 oz, while a 1 oz platinum version was also part of the release schedule.

The bullion collection is separate from The Perth Mint’s proof collector coin program. Buyers should therefore distinguish the one-ounce Gold Lunar Goat bullion coin discussed here from the separate 2027 Goat gold proof edition, which has different production limits, pricing and presentation.
